Shallow Pottery
by Susie Hallows
Susie Hallow is a ceramic artist based near the South Downs in Sussex, working primarily in stoneware. Drawing on a background in graphic design and two decades of teaching art, her practice brings together strong visual composition and a thoughtful, considered approach to making.
She creates wheel-thrown vessels that reflect a deep connection to nature — particularly the movement and presence of birds within the surrounding landscape.
Using muted glazes and stencilled silhouettes that reveal the raw clay beneath, her pieces balance simplicity with quiet detail. Through clean lines, natural tones and a sense of stillness, she aims to create work that evokes calm and understated beauty. The story within her pieces does not rely on narrative, but emerges from nature itself.
She has exhibited throughout Sussex, including Brighton Artists Open Houses, Artwave, and group exhibitions at venues such as The Crypt.
