Room Thirteen

by Tessa Cushan

Tessa Cushan is the creative force behind Room Thirteen, a brand dedicated to refinishing vintage furniture to an exceptional standard. She specialises in transforming unassuming, outdated pieces into stylish statement furniture that feels completely at home in modern interiors.

Every piece is personally sourced and handpicked by Tessa, chosen for its hidden potential. Many require careful renovation to restore their functionality, and after extensive preparation, she designs and hand-paints artwork that enhances and complements each individual piece. Her inspiration comes from everywhere — from a tile in an old church to a pattern spotted on someone’s T-shirt. She is constantly collecting colours, textures and details from the world around her.

The final stage is perhaps her favourite: finding each piece a new home. Whenever possible, Tessa delivers the furniture herself, loving the opportunity to see where it will live and to witness the new owner’s reaction. There is deep satisfaction in rescuing furniture from landfill and ensuring it will be used and cherished for many years to come.

Tessa is naturally drawn to bold, colourful designs and works exclusively with professional-grade products to achieve a sleek, durable and beautifully finished result. Her latest creations can be followed on Facebook and Instagram.

Her workshop is based in the stunning Sussex countryside, but the story of Room Thirteen began many years ago in her living room in Brighton — at number 13 — where the name was born.
