Ellie Hipkin

Based in Brighton, Ellie creates textile artworks inspired by the shifting moods of weather, trees and landscape. Walks through the Sussex countryside — pausing to look up through the canopy and down at the wild plants beneath — provide an endless source of inspiration.

Her latest collection, When We Look Up, explores the quiet poetry of skies and trees. Beginning with abstract painted surfaces that echo changing atmospheres, she layers these with digital prints taken from her own photographs. Machine embroidery defines the silhouettes of branches, while delicate hand stitching suggests the movement of air and light passing through them. Through a combination of painting, printing, collage, appliqué and stitch, she builds richly textured surfaces with a strong sense of depth.

Each thread and brushstroke reflects the fleeting beauty of seasonal change — moments of colour, light and movement unfolding above us.
